Watt (CP, p. 492-493) observes: “Roxburgh (see Flora Indica, p.
726-728) assigned four or five types of tubers to separate specific posi-
tions, chiefly on account of their shape and colour. He, however, ad-
mitted that he would be quite prepared to accept all these races as
belonging to the same species.” Hooker (Flora of India 6, p. 296-297)
described D. ALATA LINN. as a species and considered b, c, d and e as
“imperfectly known and indeterminable species;” Prain and Burkill
(see Watt, l. c.) have recorded Roxburgh’s four forms (b, c, d and e)
under D. ALATA LINN. and have formed varietal positions for each;
the Index Kewensis gives the five forms, mentioned as a-e, as separate
species; see also the article: Dioscorea, IRM 3, p. 67-76;
